UBPC Alamar. UBPC Alamar is changing the old motif that Cuban peasants were the lowest of society (Tierralismo). Many of the current workers have middle class backgrounds such as doctor, technicians and bureaucrats that lost opportunity to work after the collapse of the Soviet Union. UBPC has both youth and retired citizens working with them. The fate of Day Four: If you have been following my trip to Cuba, you may be wondering what happened to Day Four. Alamar is also home to the Organoponico Vivero Alamar, a UBPC co-operative producing organically grown vegetables and medicinal plants. Originally created during the "Special Period" after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the farm has grown to 10.4 hectares, and employs many—in particular senior citizens—from the local community.

Located in the eastern part of Havana, it is the largest farm cooperative in the city. The Cuban Council of State approved a new Decree Law that establishes a new social security regime for workers in the Basic Units of Cooperative Production (UBPC), which will demand greater productivity from these entities and less dependence on the state budget. Taken together, the UBPC and CPA production cooperatives farm 56% of Cuba’s cultivated lands (Table 1). The remaining 44% is fairly evenly divided between state and individual producers.
